Do niedawna gatunek ten był dzielony na dwa podgatunki: Ph. ruber ruber i Ph. ruber roseus; jednak decyzjami europejskich komisji taksonomicznych (np. Knox et al. 20021) drugi z nich uzyskał status oddzielnego gatunku - flaming różowy Phoenicopterus roseus.
